74 Coaches Ready for Concussion Clinic

High school sports kick off in a few weeks and high school coaches are a month away from a state-wide deadline requiring them to undergo concussion training.  It’s part of a new state law that went into effect last year, but gave coaches until September 1, 2012 to be compliant.  To help, St. Joseph is offering a coaches’ concussion clinic this Friday as part of its newly created Brazos Valley Sports Medicine Concussion Program.

St. Joseph Brazos Valley Sports Medicine Concussion Program

This concussion program is the only one like it in the BrazosValley and the only program that monitors both cognitive and balance progress.  Prior to injury or at the beginning of the season, athletes perform a balance test and cognitive test to determine their baseline.  If an injury occurs, they retake the tests and doctors can compare the results.  Including a balance test in the process provides an advantage to athletes and sports programs – students who have not regained total balance before returning to play are more likely to be injured.

Texas House Bill 2038

  • Known as Natasha’s Law
  • Requires coaches to have 2 hours of concussion education every 2 years
  • Schools must create a concussion team made up of doctors, trainers, etc..
  • Stringent rules about an athletes return to play following a concussion
