Texas A&M Health Science Center partners with St. Joseph Health System to customize health and wellness care for seniors

April 29, 2015 (Bryan, Texas) – St. Joseph Health System has partnered with the Texas A&M Health Science Center to develop a health and wellness center in Bryan, Texas, devoted to seniors. Known as the MatureWell Lifestyle Center, this two-story, 23,000-square-foot complex will offer a single destination for both healthy seniors to achieve their wellness goals as well as those seniors who need to manage chronic conditions.

Conveniently located within a growing area of our community, the MatureWell Lifestyle Center will be constructed in the Atlas Texas Development located near Traditions Club and the developing Parc at Traditions senior living community. The MatureWell Lifestyle Center will complement an array of retail and business entities being developed in the Atlas Texas Development area for seniors and the professional community including a luxury hotel, shops and restaurants. While specific amenities of the MatureWell Lifestyle Center are still being developed, plans are underway to break ground later this year.

“As more and more seniors move to Bryan/College Station to retire, and baby boomers continue to age, this new center puts St. Joseph at the forefront of changing the way these individuals can achieve their wellness and lifestyle goals, along with managing chronic conditions that generally come with the aging process,” said Kathy Krusie, CEO, St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

Baby boomers make up about 78 million Americans. As the oldest of them are now hitting retirement age, many have additional medical needs, which will have a marked impact on the U.S. healthcare system. As such, healthcare providers across the country are seeking opportunities to advance preventative care and effectively control chronic diseases before the “Silver Tsunami” hits. St. Joseph and Texas A&M understand that as baby boomers age, they have different expectations for their life.

“As individuals age, we want to continue to live vibrant, energetic and exciting lives, and good health is a key component. We also want to manage our chronic diseases differently. Doing so can be complex, especially as we age and often face multiple conditions – such as arthritis and hypertension. Consumers are more educated than ever, and unlike days gone by, they want to be active participants and decision makers in their care. At the MatureWell Lifestyle Center, physicians and clinicians from St. Joseph and the Texas A&M Health Science Center will help them manage their health and achieve their wellness goals,” said Kia Parsi, M.D., St. Joseph Health System.

The St. Joseph MatureWell Lifestyle Center in partnership with Texas A&M Health Science Center will offer a single destination where seniors can access a full range of services including:

  • A board-certified Geriatrician, a medical doctor specially trained to meet the unique healthcare needs of older adults. Geriatricians prevent, manage and develop care plans that address the special health problems of the elderly.
  • Experts in lifestyle medicine, including therapists, dietitians and physiologists will work with our patients, Geriatrician, family medicine physicians and specialists to develop and coordinate a customized plan of care for seniors – to both manage disease states as well as supporting an active, healthy lifestyle.
  • A gym and exercise area, complete with personal trainers and a pool area, offering unique exercise plans for mature adults.
  • Diagnostic services, including imaging and lab needs, on site for quick testing and results.
  • A pharmacy for easy prescription and medication education.

“As we continue to develop the Texas A&M Biocorridor as a national center for innovation and health transformation, we remain committed to advancing programs that benefit our patients and the health of our community,” said Brett Giroir, M.D., CEO of Texas A&M Health Science Center. “The MatureWell Lifestyle Center, in partnership with St. Joseph, is a priority project that will enable the highest quality inter-professional resources from Texas A&M Health Science Center – including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and public health professionals – to significantly improve the longevity and quality of life for our growing senior population. This effort represents the first of many new initiatives for our faculty and students that will develop and implement novel clinical care delivery initiatives, including subspecialty programs, in collaboration with our clinical partner institutions.”

This is exciting progress on the part of both St. Joseph and Texas A&M Health Science Center to further our common mission of supporting the overall health and wellness of our community. The introduction of the MatureWell Lifestyle Center will change the way seniors can achieve their health, wellness and lifestyle objectives in Bryan/College Station.
