CHI St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital Re-verified as Level II Trauma Center

Bryan, TX, March 26, 2019 – The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT) has re-verified CHI St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital as a Level II Trauma Center. This achievement recognizes CHI St. Joseph Health’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients.

Established by the ACS in 1987, the COT’s Consultation/Verification Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients. This spectrum encompasses the prehospital phase through the rehabilitation process.

Verified trauma centers like CHI St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital must meet the essential criteria that ensures trauma care capability and institutional performance, as outlined by the ACS COT. The ACS COT’s verification program does not designate trauma centers. Rather the program provides confirmation and verification that a trauma center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients. The actual establishment and designation of trauma centers is the function of the state.

“Our hospital continues to offer the highest-level Trauma Center in our immediate nine-county area, providing comprehensive care for every type of injury and continuing care from prevention to rehabilitation,” said CHI St. Joseph Health CEO Theron Park. “Our team continues to deliver the highest standard of care here in our community.”

Offering access to the most experienced trauma team in the region, the Regional Hospital Emergency and Trauma Center is backed 24/7 by trauma surgeons and specialists in orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, facial and plastic surgery, anesthesiology, radiology, critical care and other specialties. The trauma program is also one of only a handful nation-wide that operates both a ground and air ambulance service through CHI St. Joseph Health AirMedical, providing seamless coordination of care.

About the ACS: The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical education and practice to improve the care of the surgical patient. The College has over 72,000 members and is the largest association of surgeons in the world.

About CHI St. Joseph Health: CHI St. Joseph Health was the first designated trauma center in our area. It also offers the region’s first Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI with Resuscitation accreditation from the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, the highest accreditation offered by these credentialing agencies. CHI SJH has also offered an Advanced Primary Stroke Center since 2007 and is the region’s only provider of endovascular treatment, meaning the stroke team is able to treat patients within a larger window of time following onset of symptoms. The Heart Failure and Coumadin Clinic supports heart patients in follow-up and urgent care and provides tools and resources to assist patients in their transition from the hospital to home.
